 The Indian Air Force (IAF) X & Y Group is a popular entry for candidates aspiring to serve in the Air Force in technical and non-technical roles. The X Group is for technical trades, and the Y Group is for non-technical trades. Here’s the complete guide on the exam, selection process, and physical standards.

 

1. Eligibility Criteria

2. Exam Procedure

The selection for X & Y Groups is conducted in three stages:

Stage 1 – Written Exam (CBT – Computer Based Test)

  • Conducted by the Indian Air Force at various centers.

  • X Group (Technical): 50 questions each in Physics, Mathematics, English, Reasoning & General Awareness.

  • Y Group (Non-Technical): 50 questions in English, Reasoning & General Awareness.

  • Duration: 60 minutes

  • Marks: 50 questions × 1 mark each

Stage 2 – Physical Fitness Test

Candidates who clear the written exam undergo a physical fitness assessment. Tests include:

  • 1.6 km run within 7 minutes

  • Push-ups, sit-ups, and other basic exercises

  • General assessment of agility, stamina, and fitness

Stage 3 – Medical Examination

Selected candidates from the physical test are sent to IAF medical boards. This is a detailed check to ensure candidates meet the required medical and physical standards.


3. Physical and Medical Standards

X & Y Group physical requirements include:

Note: X Group has stricter medical standards than Y Group due to technical responsibilities.


4. Selection Procedure

The final selection is based on a combined performance in:

  1. Written Exam (CBT)

  2. Physical Fitness Test

  3. Medical Examination

Only candidates who clear all stages are eligible for joining the Air Force Training Academy.


5. Training

Selected candidates undergo technical or non-technical training at the Air Force Training Establishments:

  • X Group: Technical trades training for aircraft, radar, electronics, and mechanical systems

  • Y Group: Non-technical trades including logistics, administration, and air traffic control


Indian Air Force Agniveer (After 10th) 

The Agnipath Scheme allows young candidates to join the Indian Air Force (IAF) as Agniveers, even after completing the 10th standard. This short-term defence career provides training, discipline, and an opportunity to serve the nation.

Note: For technical trades (Group X), candidates need 12th pass with Physics & Maths. After 10th, candidates can apply for Group Y (Non-Technical trades).


2. Selection Procedure

The IAF Agniveer selection is done in three stages:

Step 1 – Written Exam / Computer-Based Test (CBT)

  • Subjects: English, Mathematics, General Knowledge, and Reasoning

  • Duration: 60 minutes

  • Marks vary depending on the trade

Step 2 – Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

  • 1.6 km run in 7-8 minutes

  • Push-ups, sit-ups, and other exercises

  • Assessment of stamina, strength, and agility

Step 3 – Medical Examination

  • Conducted at IAF medical boards

  • Ensures candidates meet all medical and physical standards

Candidates who pass all three stages are selected for training in the Air Force.
